Dear Nurse Ansalong:
I'm a young teen RHPS fan and I have a few questions that puzzled me about Rocky Horror. I mean, I love the film and have seen it, like, 21 times (but not in a theater yet, hopefully soon) but a couple things struck my curiosity.
1) One thing was, since i'm interested in making the costumes (I made a Frank costume out of paper, go figure) and was wondering... did any of the characters wear wigs or anything, because I'm trying hard to match the hairstyles.
I heard that Tim Curry might have, and Susan's hair changes colors drastically (ie, Red, to Blond, to Strawberry Blond). Just curious.
2) Also, about Frankie (who is the coolest person I've ever seen) Would you consider Frank to be not gay, but bi? I mean, he seduced both Janet and Brad, and seemed attracted to both of them...
3) On this topic, I want to mention the Floor Show. I mean, Brad and Rocky (and Dr Scott) have turned into transvestal Frank lookalikes, and for a brief 2 seconds in the pool, Janet can be seen making out with Columbia. Is Columbia also bi, or did the Transducer turned everybody gay?
4) Also, something that's been biting at me ever since I found a 20 year old out of print copy of Shock Treatment at Media Play, where is Sal Piro? I can't find him, although in his first book he said he was in the opening sequence.
5) Final question, what happened to the 'Rocky Horror Shows His Heels' sequel where Janet has Frank's baby, will ROTOQ ever be made, and despite what some websites say, is Phantom Of The Paradise part of the Rocky series?
-Dr. X's Creature
Creature, it sounds like you're just full of questions! I hope that these help you a little...
1) Everyone in the film has got their own hair on display. The different lighting set-ups could be what's causing your confusion with Janet's hair. Depending on the amount of light and direction of it, her hair could change shade from scene to scene. That being said, all of the hair in the film is the performer's actual hair.
2) If you wanted to follow the normal naming ideas, you would probably call Frank bisexual. In the course of the film, it's revealed or shown that he sleeps or has slept with Brad, Janet, Columbia, Rocky, and Eddie and he even offers the fact that '...when the mood takes me, I can be quite generous' to Magenta. From all of the visible evidence in the film, it's pretty obvious that Frank is bisexual.
3) I think that Columbia is also bisexual. It seems like she and Magenta are seriously starting to enjoy themselves at the end of 'Toucha'. While the Transducer might have brought out her feelings even farther, I think that it's definately possible that Columbia is bisexual.
4) Unless you're paying attention, it is very possible to miss Sal's appearance in SHOCK TREATMENT. Watch during the opening credits as the Stage Manager is walking down the spiral staircase. If you look behind Kirk's Koffee Korner, you'll see a man talking on a phone. That person is Sal...
5) There were many different versions of an RHPS sequel that led up to SHOCK TREATMENT. A lot of those scripts, like 'Rocky Horror Shows His Heels' wound up being blended into the final product of ST. Currently, with RO'B working on a new RHS/RHPS sequel, it seems like ROTOQ might never be made in it's shown form. It could however follow the same fate as '... Heels' and be added into whatever new script is being created. And, no, PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE is not part of the Rocky series. It's just a film that has similarities to RHPS and ST, but that is all the connection that there is.
